Can tourists buy cannabis in Thailand?
The open-counter days of 2022 to mid-2025 are over. You can still buy legally as a visitor, but there is a step in between that most travel blogs skip.
Short answer: yes, with a Thai prescription. Be 20 or older, bring your passport, get a PT33 from a licensed Thai practitioner, then buy in person at a licensed dispensary. Your card or prescription from home does not count. Do not smoke in public and do not take anything out of the country.
The three steps
- Get assessed. A clinic, a dispensary with a practitioner on site, or a proper telemedicine service. Passport required. Reported fee: a few hundred to about 1,500 baht. Approval is the practitioner's decision.
- Hold the PT33. Paper form, your name, up to 30 days of supply, single use. Read how the PT33 works.
- Buy in person. The shop checks the form and your passport and keeps the form. No online orders, no delivery.
What gets visitors in trouble
- Buying from a shop that does not ask for a prescription. The sale is illegal and the shop may be raided.
- Smoking in public: streets, beaches, bars, hotel balconies where it bothers others.
- Carrying it to the airport. Border checks treat it as a narcotic offence.
- Carrying more than your prescription covers.
- Assuming a foreign card, letter or app makes you exempt. It does not.
What has not changed
- CBD products at or under 0.2% THC are reported to need no prescription.
- You must be 20. Shops and clinics check.
- Licensed dispensaries still operate across the country. High Time Maps lists them by province with photos and hours.
Before you fly
Read the current cannabis law in Thailand so nothing at the counter surprises you. If a clinic or shop tells you something different from this page, they may be right and we may be behind. The rules moved in 2022 and again in 2025.
Quick answers
Can tourists buy weed in Thailand?
Yes, if you are 20 or older and get a PT33 prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner. Clinics and many dispensaries will assess visitors with a passport. Without the PT33, a licensed shop should refuse you.
Does my medical marijuana card from the US, Canada or Europe work?
No. Thailand only recognises its own PT33 form issued by a Thai-licensed practitioner.
How much does it cost a tourist?
Consultation fees reported by clinics run from a few hundred baht to about 1,500 baht, plus whatever you buy. A prescription is not guaranteed.
Can I smoke on the beach or in the street?
No. Public consumption is an offence. Smoke in private, and check your hotel’s policy.
Can I take some home?
No. Leaving Thailand with cannabis is a criminal offence here and a serious one wherever you land.
